I started photography in 2003 as a way of capturing the magic around me, the very first thing I ever photographed was a leopard cub (I worked as a safari guide at Londolozi).

The combination of right place, right time, passion and perseverance meant within a year of taking my first ever image I was working for Getty and Gallo Images as a stock photographer.

It was different back then, it all was (E6) slide film and had to be technically perfect in camera, no post production. Also my focus was exclusively wildlife basis but as the digital change swept in so too did things change for me.

I moved away from safari life to Cape Town, and went digital. Quality then wasn’t good enough for stock and so photographically, at least professionally, took a back seat for a number of years.

Then in 2010 on suggestion from clients that I had helped with photography while doing ‘regular’ tours, I combined my passions and knowledge to create Photography Tours www.photographytours.co.za the first business of its kind in the Cape Town region.

Never easy to go out on your own, the journey has been interesting one but am happy to say it’s now flowing nicely.

Q & A

I have always used Nikon. Like every other photographer I know I suffer from (EAS) Equipment Acquisition Syndrome. However we each have to work within our own personal budgets and its only in recent years that I have been able to upgrade to full frame and pro grade lenses.

28-300mm F2.8
16-35 F4 & 50mm 1.8
Accessories

Nikon Remote
Lee Filter Systems

* Slide Images were shot using Nikon F90 and F100 with an assortment of lens

My advice to photographers is to buy the best they can afford as there is no doubt with the advanced digital technology today’s top end bodies and lenses offer huge advantages.

DO YOU USE PHOTOSHOP ON YOUR IMAGES

Absolutely!

Digital cameras cannot (straight out of camera) create the colour, saturation and quality of slide film.

I use Photoshop to straighten, sharpen, crop, clone out distractions, correct white balance and enhance colours, textures and tonal contrast.

But I do not use Photoshop to recreate anything. There is no adding in or changing of composition. So a shot with a 100 birds in the sky has a hundred birds, I do not drop in skies or add rainbows or light affects that were not in the original scene.

I do however blend images for HDR shots and use multiple exposure techniques for the full moon.

DID YOU STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY

I am self- taught (read a lot of books!) but was fortunate during my time as a safari guide to have guided some amazing wildlife photographers such as Richard Du Toit, Gerald Hinde & Will Taylor and a host of other international photographers, so I had an amazing opportunity to ask for tips and advice.

ARE ANY OF YOUR PHOTOS TAKEN OF ‘TAME’ ANIMALS

All my photographs are taken of free roaming wild animals. In certain private game lodges the animals have habituated or become accustomed to the vehicles allowing one to get really close. If I have visited a wildlife sanctuary then I have mentioned it in the photo captions.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE

I live in the beautiful city of Cape Town!

HAVE YOU WON ANY AWARDS

Though I realise the virtue of recognition through photographic awards I haven’t entered many competitions. Each one I have entered to date I have received an award of sorts and a couple first places but that doesn’t say much as I haven’t entered that many.

WHAT DID YOU STUDY

In conjunction to my conservation studies I have also completed numerous field guide courses and studies as listed below.

• 3 Year National Diploma Nature Conservation
• 4th Year B-Tech Degree in Nature Conservation
• Field Guide Qualifications FGASA levels 1,2 & 3
• Field Guide Qualifications FGASA level SKS DA (Specialised Skills with Dangerous Animals)
• Field Guide Qualification FGASA level SKS Specialist Birding (Theory)
• Tracking Guide Qualifications FGASA levels I & 2
• Cultural Field Guide, Western Cape, Garden Route, Namaqualand.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

My parents were unable to have children of their own so they adopted six from four different backgrounds.

After our flock fledged the roost my parents need to help children continued with their establishment of a non-profit orphanage (South of Durban – East Coast South Africa) for abandoned and vulnerable African children.

There are approximately 70 children under their care in an ever growing community of children and workers.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE DONATIONS TO THIS ORPHANAGE

It certainly is and any form of help or donation would be greatly appreciated! There is also a volunteer program for those that want a more hands on approach.

Please see their website for further details: www.motherofpeace.org.za

DO YOU RUN PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOPS

Yes I do please sign up for my mailing list to get updates of where and when.
For groups 6-10 I can also do private weekend, day or multi-day workshops subject to my availability.
